Project Summary

The purpose of the project is to identify the role and value of professional services that community pharmacy can provide to people who are at risk of asthma or present with the disease. A literature review has been conducted to inform the development of a Pharmacy Asthma Care Module to pilot in the project.

The Pharmacy Asthma Care project has been designed for the pharmacist to assist in the identification of people who are at risk of asthma or have poorly managed asthma, as well as provide continued support and management to people with diagnosed asthma. The module has been developed to identify, manage, educate and appropriately refer people who present with asthma to pharmacy.

The module will not just focus on improving the clinical skills of the pharmacist as earlier asthma projects have done. Rather it will provide a practical system of protocols for the pharmacist and pharmacy staff to follow in order to provide an effective and relevant asthma management service based on the proven National Asthma Council’s Six Step Asthma Plan. It will aim to link in with the Government’s GP Asthma 3+Visit Plan, with the objective of demonstrating the cost effectiveness of pharmacist’s participation in this plan.
